Weather Alert System — Automated Safety Monitoring for St. Mary's Cement

This comprehensive weather monitoring system provides automated surveillance of hazardous weather conditions at the Charlevoix plant, with immediate notifications to supervisors when safety thresholds are exceeded.

Real-Time Condition Monitoring

The platform monitors multiple critical weather parameters including wind speed, temperature extremes, precipitation intensity, visibility, hail, and icing conditions. Each alert criterion can be customized with specific thresholds aligned to MSHA and OSHA regulations—such as 20 mph for personnel lift assessments, 28 mph for aerial lift shutdown, 30 mph for material handling cessation, and 40 mph for complete elevated work stoppage. A built-in cooldown system prevents alert fatigue by ensuring supervisors aren't repeatedly notified for ongoing conditions—configurable from 5 minutes to 24 hours per alert type.

Intelligent Supervisor Management

The supervisor management interface allows precise control over who receives which alerts and when. Each supervisor can be assigned to specific shifts (day, night, or all shifts) and configured to receive only relevant alert types based on their operational responsibilities—whether high wind warnings, extreme temperature protocols, heavy precipitation advisories, or low visibility conditions. Phone numbers are validated and formatted automatically, and supervisor records can be easily edited or removed as staffing changes.

Flexible Alert Options

Alert priority levels range from low-priority SMS notifications to critical-level escalations that place multiple phone calls until acknowledged, ensuring life-safety situations receive immediate attention. When automated alerts aren't enough, the manual alert feature allows supervisors to compose and send custom messages to selected recipients with a single click—perfect for situations that don't fit predefined criteria.

Compliance-Ready Documentation

The comprehensive alert history creates an auditable compliance trail for MSHA inspections, documenting exactly when conditions became hazardous, which supervisors were notified, and what actions were taken. All data persists between sessions, ensuring records aren't lost if the browser closes unexpectedly.

Current Status & Production Path

This proof-of-concept demonstrates the complete user interface and workflow using simulated weather data with 5-minute update intervals. When deployed to production with AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, and Twilio integration, the system will connect to live weather APIs for continuous monitoring and deliver instant multi-channel notifications via SMS, email, and voice calls. This proactive approach to weather safety transforms reactive decision-making into systematic, data-driven protocols that protect workers while maintaining detailed documentation for regulatory compliance.
